How do you record a song?
The setting for a recording is often overlooked. A creative space with a cosy, warm feel definitely helps, and that is what we have at The Hideout Studio!
Recording a song in the studio can be done in several ways:
- What is "layer cake recording"
Recording where the musicians record "layer on layer", so the track comes to life in layers. The musicians might first record together in the same room ( ideally to a click track ), and then each record their own part. We can isolate a rhythm section when recording a song, so the sources are "clean" when they are mixed.
The clear advantage of this type of recording is maximum freedom over each element in post-production, because they are completely clean and isolated.
- Live recording
Here all the musicians play at the same time in the same place, with good communication and the chance to "capture the moment". This way to record a song often brings out the "life" in the music, it feels genuine and present. The challenge, of course, is that individual mistakes are hard to fix, since several people record at once and isolation is naturally lower, because contact between the musicians comes first.
- Hybrid recording
For lack of a better word: an approach we see more and more is a hybrid model, where artists bring pre-recorded backing tracks that play in their monitor along with a click. It is a really efficient way to record.

Recording: how much does it cost to record a song?
The cost of recording one song varies a lot. Some artists record 12-15 tracks in a day, while others set aside 1-2 days in the studio per track.
As a rule of thumb, a rock/pop band can usually do 2 tracks a day, but again, it varies a lot.
What do you need to record a song?
In principle, these days you "just need a computer" with some kind of DAW. In our studio we use Pro Tools. To get sound into the digital world, you need a recording device ( microphone ) and an A/D converter ( analogue to digital converter ).
In principle, that is all you need.
How much does a song earn?
Pay per stream varies:
-
Spotify: DKK 8.8 per 1,000 streams
-
Spotify Free: DKK 0.9 per 1,000 streams
-
Apple Music: DKK 26.6 per 1,000 streams
-
Tidal: DKK 14.6 per 1,000 streams
-
TDC Play: DKK 17.4 per 1,000 streams
-
YouTube: DKK 2 per 1,000 streams

What are mixing and mastering?
At The Hideout Studio we do mixing and mastering for both internationally touring artists and up-and-coming acts.
We finish our own recordings, but we also receive mixes from other studios when artists want that special "The Hideout Studio" touch on their sound.
We have the experience to take your sound to new heights, whether it is rock, pop, metal, jazz, singer-songwriter or big band.
In short, mixing is the process of combining the individual tracks into one coherent piece of music.
Mastering is, in short, the process where the music is checked through and made ready for distribution, where it has to sit alongside other artists' music.

What does a professional recording studio cost?
At The Hideout Studio, our recording studio in Aalborg, a studio day costs DKK 3,500 incl. VAT. The price includes an engineer and studio hire.
A studio day runs from 09:00 to 18:00, a full 9 hours, unless otherwise agreed.
We have all the skills "in house": mixing, mastering, distribution, photo and video. That is why we can keep our prices so competitive.
